September is always such an important month for children of a school going age.
A new school year brings lots of excitement, but it can also bring plenty of big feelings. A new classroom, a new teacher, new routines and, for some children, starting school for the very first time. Even children returning to school can feel a little unsure as they adjust to all the changes that September brings.
At The Purple Bell School Age Childcare in Gaelscoil an Inbhir Mhóir, one of the loveliest parts of September has been watching new friendships begin and old friendships grow.
Having our service right here onsite has been such a lovely support during this transition. After a busy school day, the children come into a familiar space where they can relax, play, chat about their day and simply enjoy being with their friends. For our younger children in particular, knowing where they are going after school and seeing familiar faces waiting for them can bring a little extra reassurance during those first few weeks.
We’ve had lots of conversations about new teachers, new classrooms and how everyone is feeling. Sometimes children want to tell us every little detail about their day, and sometimes they just need some time to switch off and play, both are equally important.
Through games, outdoor play, creative activities and plenty of time just spent together, we have watched children who may have been a little nervous at the beginning of the month become more settled, confident and comfortable in their new routines.
School-age childcare gives children an opportunity to build friendships outside of the classroom, mix with children of different ages and classes, learn from one another and feel part of their own little community.
September may be a month of big changes, but it has also been a month filled with new beginnings, growing confidence, lots of laughter and wonderful new friendships at The Purple Bell.
We couldn’t be prouder of how well our children have settled into the first month of another exciting year together.
