Questions Parents Often Ask Before Choosing Childcare

Posted on July 29, 2026

Choosing the right childcare service is one of the biggest decisions parents make. Whether your child is starting after-school care for the first time or you’re looking for a new setting, it’s natural to have lots of questions.

At the end of the day, every parent wants the same thing. To know their child is safe, happy and well cared for in an environment that can meet their needs.

Here are some of the questions parents ask most often before choosing childcare, along with why they matter.

1. Is My Child Going to Be Happy Here?

For most parents, this is the number one concern, and rightly so.

A good childcare service should feel welcoming from the moment you walk through the door. Children should be greeted warmly, encouraged to join in activities and given the time they need to settle in.

Every child is different. Some make friends straight away, while others take a little longer. A caring childcare team understands this and helps every child feel included and valued. We ask every child’s likes and dislikes before they arrive. This can help the staff communicate with the children about something they are interested in, prepare activities that they may like, or simply just understand things children don’t like.

2. Is the Environment Safe?

Parents want peace of mind knowing their child is in a safe and secure environment.

It’s worth asking about:

  • Secure entry and collection procedures
  • Staff qualifications and training
  • First aid certification
  • Safety policies and emergency procedures
  • How accidents or incidents are managed
  • A professional childcare provider will always be happy to explain how they keep children safe.

Our team are trained as First Aid Responders, this helps to reassure parents that our team can help to respond to any accidents or incidents that may occur in a professional manner and with a high standard of care.

3. What Will My Child Be Doing?

No one wants children sitting in front of a screen all afternoon. Most come to our service to socialise, learn, play and most importantly, thrive in an environment that amuses them.

Ask about the daily activities on offer. A good after-school programme should include a balance of:

  • Outdoor play
  • Arts and crafts
  • Fun and educational games
  • Free play
  • Reading
  • Sports and physical activities
  • Quiet time/ chill out time

Children learn best when they’re having fun and exploring new interests. Although not every activity we facilitate may suit every child, our team is very happy to find something that your child does like.

4. Will There Be Time for Homework?

Many parents appreciate having homework completed before they get home from work.

Some childcare services offer supervised homework time, giving children a quiet space to focus while staff are available to offer encouragement if needed.

This can make evenings at home much more relaxed for the whole family. I must add, children are in no way forced to do their homework while in our care, and some parents prefer that they do their homework when they go home. We are completely happy with whatever the child is happiest doing it.

5. How Are Different Ages Catered For?

Children aged 4 to 12 have very different interests and needs.

Ask how activities are adapted for different age groups. Younger children often enjoy imaginative play and crafts, while older children may prefer sports, board games, STEM activities or creative projects.

A quality childcare service ensures every child feels challenged, included and engaged.

Our activities are designed keeping all the children at the centre of what they choose to do. While us, the Educators, create and facilitate activities, we are also very happy to get stuck in on all the fun too.

We have weekly check-ins with the children, and they let us know what they would like to do for the week ahead. It is really important that the children’s opinions and ideas are valued and reflected in their own environment. After all, it is because of the children, that we are in a job that we love so dearly, so seeing things they like and their ideas coming to life, in the place they come to each day, helps them to feel a sense of belonging too.

6. How Will You Communicate With Me?

Good communication between parents and childcare staff is essential.

Parents should feel comfortable asking questions or discussing any concerns. It’s always reassuring to know how updates are shared and who to speak to if you need information about your child’s day.

Building a strong partnership between families and childcare staff helps children feel more secure.

We use Childpaths to help us communicate with parents. This is also where a staff member may send parents some photos of what their children get up to, but it also allows parents to update information about their child on a regular basis. For example, if your child has developed a new fear, or recently really enjoyed a new activity, this can be amended at any time through their time in the service.

7. What Happens if My Child Is Shy or Nervous?

Starting somewhere new can feel like a big step because it is. Even as adults, starting a new job, or joining a gym, can cause us to be anxious. So for children, it can seem so much bigger.

Experienced childcare staff understand that some children need a little extra reassurance. Taking time to introduce them to new friends, involving them in activities at their own pace and helping them build confidence can make all the difference.

Most children settle in much quicker than parents expect but some may take a little longer. It is important to know that not every child is the same, and we are more than happy to accommodate longer settling in periods if needs be. Joining a new service can take time, and it is totally normal to have little hiccups during the settling in period.

8. Is the Childcare Service Flexible?

Life doesn’t always go to plan.

Parents often ask about collection times, school holidays, emergency arrangements and whether additional days can be booked when needed.

Knowing there’s flexibility can make managing family life that little bit easier.

While our service does require set days and times, we understand that things come up and times may need to change. Life happens, and that’s ok. As long as we are always in line with the correct adult to child ratio, and not at full capacity, we can cater for any extra hours or days that may be needed unexpectedly.

Choosing the Right Childcare

Every family is different, and there’s no single childcare setting that’s right for everyone. The most important thing is finding a place where your child feels safe, supported and happy.

Don’t be afraid to ask us any questions. Arrange a visit and spend some time getting a feel for the environment. Choosing a childcare service is a big decision. We’re always happy to answer any questions, show families around and explain how we support children. Asking our staff questions during the visit is often the best reassurance you can get.

At The Purple Bell, we understand that choosing the right childcare service for your pride and joy, really is a big deal. We believe every child deserves a place where they can make friends, build confidence and most of all, be in a place where they are happy to be.
