At our service, we believe that meaningful connections help children grow into compassionate, confident, and community-minded individuals. One of the ways we nurture this is through our very special Pen Pal Programme with the residents of Asgard Lodge Nursing Home in Arklow.
Throughout the year, the children in our service write letters, create colourful drawings, and design thoughtful cards for the residents. In return, we eagerly await their replies and there was such great excitement when we got to visit them. The simple exchange of words and artwork grew into the most heartwarming connections.
For many residents, receiving a handwritten letter or picture from a child can bring joy, warmth, and a sense of connection to the wider community.
The letters and drawings can give us all something special to look forward to. They can spark memories and stories from the residents’ own childhoods. They can help to reduce feelings of isolation and even more importantly create a sense of being valued and remembered.
A child’s drawing or kind message can make a very meaningful difference to someone’s day. Knowing that local children are thinking of them can help to strengthen that important link between generations in our community.
While the programme brings happiness to the residents, it also offers powerful learning and developmental opportunities for the children in The Purple Bell.
Writing to someone in a nursing home encourages children to think about others and consider how their words might make someone feel. They learn the importance of kindness, respect, compassion and values that are central to who we are as a service.
Through this programme, the children can learn that they are part of a wider community in Arklow. They can begin to understand the importance of inclusion and maintaining connections across generations.
It also helps them see that friendships can exist at any age!
One of the most special moments for us as educators is watching children carefully choose their words, decorate their pages with care, and beam with pride showing us their creations.
Our Pen Pal Programme with Asgard Lodge Nursing Home is a reminder that small acts of kindness can have such a big impact. We are so proud of our children for the care and thought they put into every letter, and we are incredibly grateful to the residents and the team at Asgard for welcoming us and this wonderful programme.
Together, we are creating connections that truly brighten all of our days.
