With the arrival of warmer, brighter days, a real sense of adventure has taken hold in The Purple Bell. The children have been eager to get outside, and it’s been so wonderful to see how this shift to outdoor play has positively influenced the overall mood, energy, and atmosphere each day. There’s a new buzz of excitement, curiosity, and joy that comes with spending more time in the fresh air.
We’ve been making the most of our beautiful surroundings by heading out on some exciting scavenger hunt adventures. Our recent trips to the forest and the beach have been a huge success. The children loved exploring nature up close, searching for hidden treasures among the trees, spotting wildlife, and working together to complete their challenges. At the beach, the adventure continued as they collected shells, watched the waves crashing against the shore, and embraced the freedom of the open space that is almost right on our doorstep.
Back at our setting, outdoor play has become a big part of our daily routine. We are also very lucky to get to use the beautifully kept grounds of Arklow United Football club. From building obstacle courses to organising group games, the children have been active, engaged, and full of enthusiasm. These activities not only support physical development but also encourage teamwork, problem solving, and resilience.
What’s been especially noticeable to me is the positive impact outdoor time has had on everyone. The children seem more relaxed, happier, and more settled after being outside. Fresh air and movement certainly helps to reduce stress, improve focus, and boost our overall well being. I feel recently I am seeing such a lovely balance between calm and energy. The children return indoors refreshed, yet still motivated to engage, play, and connect with others.
Outdoor experiences offer something for everyone. They spark imagination, build confidence, and create opportunities for meaningful social interactions. When I think of the wonderful benefits of Forest Schools, it makes me wonder should we all be taking a leaf out of their book. Perhaps we should be wrapping up more and exploring even in the rain and the cold. As the seasons change, maybe our mindsets should too.
Either way, we are really looking forward to many more outdoor adventures as this season continues and we will be ready to embrace the cold and the rain when it comes back again 🙂
